Ugnayan sa Canada Successfully Held in Calgary

CALGARY 25 May 2018 — The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary successfully co-organized with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) the Ugnayan sa Canada at the Philippine Cultural Community Center in Northeast Calgary on 14-15 May.
Two well-attended major events took place - the Youth Consultation on 14 May followed by the Filipino Community Leaders’ Meeting the next day. The CFO gave presentation on its programs to engage the overseas Filipino youth and also discussed the programs and achievements of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.
During the open forum, the community leaders, CFO and Philippine Consulate General had a meaningful discussion on the problems affecting the Filipinos in Canada and how they could be assisted. They agreed to work together to try to address some of these problems in partnership with both the Philippine and Canadian authorities as well as non-government organizations providing various social services.

In the segment “Weavers of Relationships: Fostering Social Awareness among Filipino-Canadian Youth,” Two Calgary-based Filipino Canadians spoke. On the topic “Inspiring Stories of Filipino Canadian Youth,” Mr. Gilmore Junio, a member of the Canada Team to the 2018 and 2014 Winter Olympics, shared his life story and personal achievements. He encouraged the Filipino Canadian youth to work hard and overcome their struggles to achieve their dreams and pursue their passion.
Ms. Krizia Carlos, a registered nurse, talked about “Migration and Social Issues of Youth in Canada.” She talked about her experience as a youth broker with community-based organization Action Dignity and an advocate for mental health. She currently serves as a board volunteer with Canadian Mental Health Association and as a youth coach with the Calgary Youth Justice Society. END
