NEW YORK 25 May 2018 — The Philippine Center in New York launched the photography exhibit of two renowned Filipino photographers Mr. Carlos L. Esguerra and Dr. Thor Lidasan at the Lobby Gallery of the Philippine Center on 14 May.
The extraordinary exhibit featured award-winning landscape and architectural photos of Esguerra, a Pamana ng Pilipino Presidential awardee. In 2011, he also received the "Ani ng Dangal" award from the Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and in 2014, he was awarded the "Distinguished Alumni Award for Culture and the Arts" by his alma mater, the University of the Philippines.
Dr. Lidasan, on the other hand, is also a graduate of UP Diliman and is now an anesthesiologist based in New York. His works were captured by special cameras fitted to capture infrared light. Typical photography involves light visible to the human eye which normally corresponds to wavelengths from 390 to 700 nm, whereas infrared light ranges from 700 to 900nm, hence invisible to the naked eyes. It is the first time that the Philippine Center displayed infrared photography.
During the opening ceremony, Mr. Esguerra emphasized the importance of promoting photography as a medium for the arts. Dr. Lidasan, on the other hand, explained the process of infrared photography and highlighted how this technique could open opportunities for photo enthusiasts and professionals.
The event was co-sponsored by the UP Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity East Coast Chapter headed by its Chancellor, Mr. Christian Bautista.
The exhibit runs until 25 May 2018. END
