DAMASCUS 15 June 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Damascus, Syria commemorated Migrant Workers’ Day on 07 June 2018.
The wards from the Embassy’s Filipino Workers Resource Center presented songs and dances, and rendered popular Filipino songs fit for the said occasion, such as “Maghintay ka Lamang” and “Bagong Bayani”.
Short videos featuring the lives of Filipino migrants abroad, particularly success stories of Filipino migrants who were repatriated to the Philippines, inspired the audience who were mostly household service workers.
At the end of the program, the Embassy served a sumptuous iftar to the delight of the participating Muslim brothers and sisters who were observing fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
Migrant Workers’ Day, also called “Araw ng Pasasalamat,” is commemorated yearly since 1996, by virtue of Republic Act No. 8042 or the Migrant Workers Act, as amended. The Philippine Embassy recognizes the significant role that Filipino migrants play in Philippine society, and their invaluable contributions to the country’s economy. END
