Filipino Short Film Caps Off 2018 Euroasia Shorts in Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. 11 June 2018 – Family relationships and taking charge of one’s own life are just two of the common subjects highlighted by the nine featured films of the 2018 EuroAsia Shorts finale night, held at the Italian Embassy in the U.S. Capital on 08 June 2018.
Over 100 guests attended and enjoyed the final screening night under the overall theme of WomenWorldWide.
A panel discussion led by Susan Barocas, Adam Wojciechowicz, and Manjula Kumar that ensued after the actual screening of the films talked about how the filmmakers were able to highlight women’s strength and different roles, the institutional challenges they face, and how feminism is not just about women but also about equality.
The Philippine Embassy’s entry, “After Class” by Gino Jose, tells the story of a teacher and her student, and how the pureness of a child can empower older generations.
“It captures the enthusiasm and innocence of childhood,” Panelists Barocas said of the film.
“Two women – the younger and the older – but with two different styles, two different powers of strength, and yet there is this understanding between them,” Panelist Kumar added.
This is the fourth time that the Philippine Embassy participated in the EuroAsia Shorts. The other two Philippine entries, “Johnny Loves Dolores” and “Nanay,” both highlighted Filipina migrant stories, were screened together with Spain’s entries during the first day of the week-long festival.
“EuroAsia Shorts provides us a platform where we can showcase the works of our local filmmakers, and at the same time promote better understanding and appreciation of different cultures among participating countries,” Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez said in a statement.
Now in its 13th year, EuroAsia Shorts has shown more than 200 short films since it began in 2006. Each year presents a broad variety of films and styles connected by a single theme, with post-film discussions each night.
This year’s festival featured short films from China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, the United States and the Philippines. END
