CALGARY 13 June 2018 – The Philippines conducted a promotional campaign to make Canadian consumers in Calgary more aware and appreciative of Philippine cuisine and food products from 08 to 10 June 2018.

Dubbed as the “Flavours of the Philippines” In-Store Promotion, the event was held at the T&T Supermarket in Northeast Calgary.

The event showcased and sold at discounted prices the various food products of the Philippines, such as rice, snack food, juice and beverages, biscuits, canned goods, and condiments.

Part of the program was a cooking demonstration and food tasting featuring Mama Sita’s products.

Shoppers going to the Philippine booth inside the T&T Supermarket were also provided tourism brochures and other give-away items as they watched videos about tourism, trade and investment about the Philippines.

Jointly organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Tourism, and T&T Supermarket, the event also served as one of the side activities for the commemoration of the 120th year of Philippine Independence on 12 June 2018.

It was also held on the heel of the proclamation by the provincial government of Alberta of the Philippine Heritage Month in June of each year, in recognition of “the significant contributions of Filipino-Canadians to the social, economic, cultural and historical richness of the Province of Alberta.”

The opening program of the “Flavours of the Philippines” held at the Pacific Place Mall food court on 9 June was graced by Mr. Tom Kmiec, Member of Parliament for Calgary Shephard, Alberta Minister of Community and Social Services Irfan Sabir, and Philippine Senior Trade Commissioner Maria Roseni M. Alvero.

Members of the Philippine Cultural Center Foundation performed traditional Philippine dances during the program.

Consul General Gilberto G.B. Asuque thanked everyone who supported the event and called on the 175,000-strong Filipino community in Alberta to continue to patronize and promote Philippine products sold in Canada.

“As the Filipino community grows in this part of Canada, they will play a big role in mainstreaming Filipino cuisine and food products into the Canadian market. The ‘Flavours of the Philippines’ was a good start for this campaign,” Consul General Asuque said. END
