NEW YORK 25 June 2018 – The Philippine Mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York and the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) co-sponsored a panel discussion to introduce a UN Flagship Report on Disability and Development on 13 June 2018, on the occasion of the 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The discussion provided an overview and a peek into the contents of the UN Flagship Report on Disability and Development, which was mandated by General Assembly Resolution 69/142 in 2014 tabled by the Philippines and Tanzania.
The UN Flagship Report is intended to provide evidence-based data to guide policymakers in mainstreaming disability issues in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in monitoring and evaluating the achievement of these goals on persons with disabilities.
Evidence-based data shows that persons with disabilities are more likely to be discriminated and less likely to be employed. Women with disabilities have the lowest participation in employment. There is extensive data on the relationship between education and disability as well as on access to information and communication technology and disability. There is very little data, however, on the interphase of energy and disability.
The full report is due to be released on 03 December 2018, during the celebration of the International Day of Disabled Persons.
More than 200 researchers from various UN agencies, UN Member States, the academe, international financial institutions, research institutions, non-profit organizations, and disabled persons organizations contributed to the report. END
