Filipino-Canadian Chefs in Calgary Amaze Dinner Guests with Pinoy Cuisine

CALGARY 02 July 2018 – Filipino-Canadian master chefs in Calgary brought a unique Philippine culinary experience to Canadian diners in their “Dinner Tribute to Filipino Culture” at the Oxbow Restaurant on 25 June 2018.

Consul General Gilberto G.B. Asuque congratulated four of the most creative and 2018 award-winning Calgary based Filipino-Canadian chefs, Jose Battad, Zac Ardena, Rubert Garcia, and Ely Salar, for bringing into the culinary scene Filipino dishes sisig, tuna and salmon kilawin, kwek kwek, lechon, desserts - coconut mousse, purple yam sponge and Kalamansi Chocolate; and cocktails-Dalandan Mojito, Gulaman Cola, San Miguel Pale Pilsner and Jackfruit smoothie.

“Balik Kultura” (A Dinner Tribute to Philippine Culture) was presented by Ms. Marietta Pangan of the Filipino Food Movement, Diaryo Alberta Society and the Hotel Arts Group.

Consul General Asuque thanked the Filipino-Canadian chefs and Ms. Pangan for organizing the dinner event that showcased the Philippine unique cuisine, as he challenged them to conduct a similar or bigger Pinoy food fest during the celebration of Philippine Heritage Month in Calgary in June 2019.

The Alberta Government proclaimed June of each year as Philippine Heritage Month, in recognition of “the significant contribution of Filipino-Canadians in Alberta to the social, economic, cultural and historical richness of the Province of Alberta.” The proclamation also recognized that the “Filipino-Canadians in Alberta represent a vibrant and dynamic component of our cultural mosaic.”

Pangan and the Filipino chefs welcomed the challenge to be part of the celebration of Philippine Heritage Month in June next year, promising to feature in their menu surprising and creatively crafted Pinoy dishes. END.
