PH Embassy, Bayanihan Council Opens Ambassador’s Basketball Cup in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI 03 July 2018 – The Bayanihan Council, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, held the opening ceremony of the Kalayaan Ambassador’s Cup 2018: Men and Women Basketball League, at the Emirates Heritage Club, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 08 June 2018.
The Ambassador’s Cup is the first of a series of events organized by the Bayanihan Council for the 120th Philippine Independence Day celebration of the Filipino community in Abu Dhabi, with the theme “Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan” (“Independence 2018: Change We Fought For, An Offering To An Abundant Future”).
The program started with the presentation of over 20 participating basketball teams. Engineer Elmer Casao, Chairman of the Bayanihan Council, delivered the welcome remarks.
Mr. Jerome Mazet of Local Organizing Committee of the AFC Asian Cup introduced the AFC Asian Cup 2019, in which the Philippine National Football Team (“The Azkals”) is participating next year in Abu Dhabi.
In his remarks, Philippine Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Constancio R. Vingno Jr. congratulated the Bayanihan Council, Abu Dhabi Guardians Founders Council (ADGFC), United Women Ballers Association (UWBA), and members of the organizing committee for the success of the tournament.
Ambassador Vingno also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Filipino community and bade farewell as he is set to travel back to the Philippines, ending his tour of duty as Philippine Ambassador to the UAE.
Other highlights of the event were the presentation of muses and awarding of the Best Muse, presentation of the Mutya ng Kasarinlan 2018 candidates, presentation of token and certificates, traditional ball tossing, and oath of sportsmanship. Ronald Precilla, Vice Chairman of the Bayanihan Council and Independence Day celebration chairman, delivered the closing remarks. Games were officially opened, and will run for the whole month of June.
The Bayanihan Council, the umbrella organization of Filipino organizations accredited to the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, currently has 59 member-organizations. The culminating event of the Philippine Independence Day celebration of the Filipino Community in Abu Dhabi was held on 29 June 2018. END
