PH Embassy Invites More Filipinos to Study in Hungary, as First Filipino Scholar Graduates

BUDAPEST 04 July 2018 – Ambassador to Hungary Maria Fe T. Pangilinan attended the commencement exercises at Szent Istvan University in Gödöllő on 09 June 2018, to warmly congratulate the first Filipino scholar to graduate under “Stipendium Hungaricum” program, Maureen Malabanan.

Malabanan graduated with a Master of Science degree in Rural Development Engineering with distinction. She will return to the Philippines after her studies.

Malabanan, who hails from Calamba, Laguna, is an employee at the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Philippine in Los Baños.

Malabanan is included in the first batch of Filipino scholars of 2016 who were accepted in the scholarship. To date, there are nine Filipino scholars under said program.

The scholarship grant falls within the framework of the “Agreement on Educational and Scientific Exchange Programme between the Philippines and Hungary. Under the Agreement, Hungary offers scholarships for 35 Filipino scholars to pursue studies leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in the fields of agriculture and sustainable development, medicine, water management engineering and hydrology, architecture and protection of cultural heritage, natural sciences, and environmental studies.

Both the Philippine and Hungarian governments recognize the importance of excellent education and the training of more experts in various fields of studies. The scholars pass through screening by the Department of Education and Tempus Public Foundation (Hungarian counterpart agency), before being admitted by their chosen university.

Eighteen students are expected to enroll in school year 2018-2019. Those interested in the scholarship may directly apply with the Commission on Higher Education. END
