NEW YORK 04 July 2018 – As part of its ongoing efforts to engage with the Filipino-American community in the United States Northeast Region through sports, the Philippine Consulate General in New York played in the 2018 Dolphy Cup in Manalapan, New Jersey on 30 June 2018.
Consulate personnel formed the Philippine basketball team for Open Division competition, and the Philippine Jr. Team for the Under-15 Division.
Both teams saw action in the tournament organized by the Jersey City Kalahi Athletic Association, which is a member of Northern American Basketball Association.
The Philippine Basketball Team is composed of personnel from the Consulate General and the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and their family members and friends, while the Philippine Jr. Team is composed of the players’ kids and their friends.
Both teams played their hearts out during the course of the competition, and managed to win one game apiece and, more importantly, gained the respect and friendship of the teams they played against.
The bulk of the participating teams come from the U.S. Northeast, specifically from the states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Other teams come from Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Northern Virginia, with the farthest team coming from Ontario, Canada.
The Consulate’s participation in the tournament strengthened its ties with the community, especially with basketball, which is a sport that has a huge Filipino following. END
