PH Consulate General in NY Hosts Seminar on Immigration Rights

NEW YORK 04 July 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in New York, in partnership with The Pilipino Association of Connecticut Inc. (PACI), hosted a “Know Our Rights” Seminar on Immigration at the Holy Spirit Church in Newington, Connecticut on 17 June 2018.

The seminar was attended by more than 80 members of the Association and the Filipino community in Connecticut.

Deputy State Director Joanna Cannon of the Office of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy discussed the Senator’s programs on immigration in Connecticut, including services provided by their office to all Connecticut residents, regardless of immigration status. Cannon expressed the readiness of Sen. Murphy’s office to extend assistance to the members of the Filipino community.

Immigration lawyer and current Executive Director of the Filipino American Legal Defense Education Fund Licelle Cobrador provided a briefing on important immigration information and immigration developments under the present U.S. leadership.

Cobrador, who is also an active member of Post’s Warden Geographic System, discussed the major shifts in immigration policies of the Trump administration. She also provided tips on what to do when an individual is confronted by an Immigration Officer.

Acting Head of Post and Deputy Consul General Kerwin Orville C. Tate provided a briefing on the current thrusts of the Philippine Consulate’s programs and activities, particularly on the Consulate’s Assistance to Nationals initiatives. Deputy Consul General Tate also emphatically mentioned the Philippine Consulate’s determination to combat human trafficking and the continued effort by the Department to stamp out immigration scams that victimize Filipinos. 

The Deputy Consul General expressed his thanks to the officers and members of PACI for their willingness to be even more proactive in working together to stop the victimization of Filipinos in Connecticut and in other parts of the East Coast. He requested more PACI members to help in the dissemination of the Philippine Consulate’s programs and activities. END
