PH Consulate General in Sydney Promotes Filipino Indigenous Fashion, Textiles

SYDNEY 05 July 2018 – In celebration of the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence, the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, in cooperation with Plaza Filipino, Narra Inc., Adhika and Flagcom, presented a fashion expo “Tuloy Po Kayo,” featuring the contemporary fashion designs of Anthill, Lumago Designs, Romoza Home, W&C T’boli and Francis Sollano.
The fashion expo was held at Tramsheds in Sydney on 02 June 2018, with the support of Cebu Pacific Air and the Department of Tourism in Sydney.
The Filipino entrepreneurs represented Filipino brands that showcased indigenous culture and products from Mindanao, and textiles of different tribal groups in the Philippines. Products of the trunk show include socially and eco-friendly jewelry, modern Filipiniana, and hand-crafted homewares and accessories.
Cebuano fashion artist Francis Sollano curated the Trunk Show, together with Anya Lim of Anthill Gallery and Shiela Lamayo.
Anthill (Alternative Nest and Trading or Training Hub for Indigenous Livelihood Seekers) is a social and cultural enterprise based in Cebu that works to preserve and promote our hand-loomed Philippine traditions by applying them in zero waste and contemporary clothing design.
Sydney-based designer Leonardo Salinas also joined the fashion show promoting his eponymous label. Chi De Jesus directed and coordinated the fashion show, in cooperation with Michelle Baltazar and Marcus Rivera.
Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2 winner Jodilly Pendre was one of the featured models during the event.
Ambassador to Australia Minda Calaguian-Cruz graced the exposition with Acting Head of Post Melanie Rita B. Diano, and the Consular Corps from Russia, Malaysia and Finland. Vivid Sydney Creative Director Ignatius Jones also attended the show.
The Trunk Show was held as part of the Philippine Culture and Arts Festival of the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of Philippine independence. The fashion expo was attended by 250 guests from the Filipino Community, fashion industry and medial groups.
On 01 June 2018, the Australia Philippines Business Council also organized a Trunk Show featuring the contemporary designs of the social entrepreneurs at Barangaroo, Sydney, attended by the business community. END.
