PH Consul General Featured at Filipino Leaders’ Night in Michigan

CHICAGO 10 July 2018 – Filipino Community leaders in Michigan met and broke bread with Consul General in Chicago Gina A. Jamoralin, who was guest of honor at the “Filipino Leaders Dinner Party” hosted by Honorary Consul General Jose Evangelista at Laurel Woods Apartments Clubhouse in Southfield, Michigan on 29 June 2018.
Dr. Evangelista also hosted a cocktail reception a few hours earlier, attended by members of the Michigan Consular Corps led by Swiss Honorary Consul Walter Wegmueller. Among the other guests was Madonna University’s first Lay President Michael Grandillo, who expressed interest in pursuing an exchange program with a counterpart institution in the Philippines.
In her remarks, Consul General Jamoralin highlighted aspects of the Consulate General’s engagement with the Filipino Community in the Midwest, including a greater focus on rekindling Filipino cultural heritage, especially among the United States-born, millennial Filipino-Americans; more active participation the civic, political and electoral processes both in the U.S. and in the Philippines through voters’ registration and education; reinvestment of Filipino goodwill or social capital through humanitarian assistance, not only in the Philippines but also in underserved urban and rural areas in the Midwest; and promotion of historical, cultural and medical tourism in the Philippines.
Emceed by newly-appointed Honorary Consul Marcus Evangelista, the program allowed Consul General Jamoralin and Deputy Consul General Romulo Victor M. Israel Jr. to field questions on different topics such as the re-acquisition/retention of Philippine citizenship, avoidance of double taxation, e-Passport, Filipino-American youth empowerment and involvement, and the current peace and order situation in the Philippines.
The dinner reception was the last activity of the day for Consul General Jamoralin, who was visiting Michigan for the first time to meet with the leaders of the Filipino Community and U.S., state and local officials, apart from leading a team to conduct a consular outreach service in Southfield.
The Consul General’s itinerary included meetings with Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence of the 14th Congressional District, and visits to Planet M and Michigan Economic Development Corporation and World Medical Relief Inc. END
