PRETORIA 11 July 2018 – The High School Glee Club of Miriam College emerged triumphant at the 2018 World Choir Games, which was held in Pretoria this July 2018.

The world-class choir—led and conducted by Nancy C. Roman, and composed of 47 choir members and support staff—won the Gold Medal at the Youth Choir of Equal Voices and the Silver Medal at the Folk Acapella. The success is more astounding as both were won at the elite Champions Category.

The young ladies were a vision of loveliness in pink as they performed their repertoire of classical songs for the Youth Choir of Equal Voices on 05 July 2018 at the Z.K. Matthews Hall of the University of South Africa.

Superbly conducted by Ms. Roman, who was herself a scene-stealer with her red Filipiniana, the choir highlighted their talent and technical excellence as they rendered a performance noted for its brilliance. The audience were suitably impressed, as could be gauged by the spirited applause the choir received.

The choir wowed audiences yet again on 07 July 2018 at the Aula Hall of the University of Pretoria. The young ladies once again dressed to impress as their Filipiniana-pink ensemble was an eye-catching fusion of the modern and the timeless.

Brilliantly conducted by Ms. Roman, the young ladies sang a medley of Filipino folk songs for the Folk Acapella. Their voices melded perfectly in a powerful yet sublime tour de force that gave new life to ageless Filipino folk songs. The audience sat enraptured by the performance, no doubt transported from cold Pretoria to the sun-lit islands of the Philippines only by the power of song.

The World Choir Games is a highly-prestigious and highly-competitive contest that is known as the Olympics among choirs and singers. The competition for this year involves 16,500 participants from 60 countries, taking part in 500 competition concerts and friendship performances.

According to Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerald B. Angeles, to participate—much more win—is a signal honor reserved only for the very best.

“The Gold and Silver Medal by the Miriam College High School Glee Club is a testament of the talent, discipline, and unwavering dedication of the choir members, the support staff, the parents, and the whole community in the pursuit of perfection. Their victory is a shining triumph for which every Filipino could take inspiration and immense pride,” Ambassador Angeles said.  END
