HONG KONG 17 July 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, in partnership with the Hong Kong Fire Services Department and the Domestic Workers Empowerment Project (DWEP), launched the “Sagip Kapwa, Press to Shock- Save a Life and Fire Safety Ambassador Training Programme” at the Sheung Wan Fire Services Station on 08 July 2018.
Consul General Antonio A. Morales and Fire Services Director Li Kin-Yat addressed 100 Household Service Workers (HSWs) attending the kick-off ceremony.
“As carers and first responders in many households in Hong Kong, the role of household service workers is critical in saving lives. This free training program will help equip them with basic rescue and safety skills, and will make them more effective and competent workers,” Consul General Morales said.
Director Li echoed the role of the HSWs in his remarks: “Foreign domestic helpers play an essential role in providing home care service to children and the elderly in local households. As members of many households in Hong Kong, they can contribute greatly in enhancing fire safety and the emergency resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients."
“In many cases, the patients’ survival rate deteriorates by 7-10 percent for every passing minute, so it’s vital that Filipino HSWs provide cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use automated external defibrillator (AED) even before the arrival of ambulance crew,” Director Li said.
After the opening ceremony, the volunteers participated in a CPR and AED demonstration performed on mannequins, and the proper use of fire extinguishers.
The training program aims to equip some 600 HSWs with basic rescue and safety skills to make them more effective and competent at their jobs in sessions to be held on five scheduled Sundays, from July to November at the University of Hong Kong.
The Fire Services Department will conduct the said trainings. The Consulate General, in coordination with DWEP, has enlisted around 500 HSWs to participate in the training program. END
