DUBAI 18 July 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, along with David John Managements Events Company, hosted and produced Leyte Normal University’s (LNU) “Limasawa, The Cultural Show” on 5 July 2018 at the Sheik Rashid Auditorium in downtown Dubai.

Some 1,000 community leaders, members of the Dubai business community, and other expatriates attended the three-hour dance-drama operetta, which depicts the legend of Rajah Kolambo and his five wives.

Sixty-one students, faculty, and administrators of the Leyte Normal University staged the production, LNU’s first in the Middle East.

In the opening remarks, Consul General Paul Raymund P. Cortes welcomed this presentation, the first event of this Consulate featuring cultural performers from the Philippines since Ballet Philippines staged a production in August 2015.

The Consul General underscored the Consulate’s focus in its cultural diplomacy strategy as a means to build the image of the Filipino and the Filipino nation, and reinforce among our diaspora our uniqueness as a people.

The audience marveled at the visually-stunning production and stage design, and sang along the medleys of memorable Filipino compositions.

Local critics applauded the production’s historical and musical values, emphasizing the need to have more of such cultural presentations to remind our overseas Filipino youth the variety and depth of our cultural heritage.

The Consulate General has organized and produced numerous cultural events, though mostly involving the participation of overseas Filipinos in Dubai rather than artists from the Philippines.

Through the use of home-grown talents from among the Community, the Consulate hopes to encapsulate the essence of the overseas Filipino, and highlight how the global overseas Filipino community remains a relevant element in our endeavors on nation-building.

Among the Consulate’s cultural programs are its annual song-writing competition, its Philippine Independence and Bayanihan (every December) community events, its biannual Inter-School Debate Competition with overseas Filipino students, its annual journalism workshop held in tandem with a Filipino publication, its quarterly photo and painting exhibits at the Consulate’s Rizal Hall gallery, and its film making workshops for students..
