HONG KONG 19 July 2018 – Consul General Antonio A. Morales called for stronger partnership between ASEAN member states and Hong Kong during the Hong Kong-ASEAN Summit held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Admiralty on 09 July 2018.
Consul General Morales was accompanied by Vice Consul Fatima G. Quintin and Attaché Charlene A. Beriana at the event.
Under the theme “Industry and Corporate Changes in the Innovation Economy,” the Summit analyzed the economic issues affecting Hong Kong and ASEAN, the two economies’ bilateral trade relationship, and the importance of innovation and technology in achieving sustained growth.
During his speech, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul MP Chan underlined that Hong Kong should continue its collaboration with the rest of the world, especially with ASEAN, to mitigate the effects of the China-U.S. “trade war.”
He also highlighted Hong Kong’s competitive edge in minimizing the impact of the trade war, accelerating its position as an international innovation hub, and solidifying its role as the super-connector between China and the international community.
Other speakers included Hong Kong Secretary for Innovation and Technology Nicholas W. Yang; HK University of Science and Technology President Prof. Tony F. Chan; Chairman of Federation of HK Industries Jimmy Kwok; CEO of HK Science and Technology Parks Corporation Albert Wong; and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Director of Research Nicholas Kwan.
The speakers talked about the importance of ASEAN to Hong Kong, role of innovation and technology in business, and the implications of the new economy to Asian corporations.
The Hong Kong-ASEAN Summit was established by Metro Finance, and has been supported by DBS Bank since 2014. Around 200 members of the ASEAN consular corps, business community, and Hong Kong government attended the event. END
