Sec. Esperon Affirms PH-UN Cooperation on Counter-Terrorism

NEW YORK 20 July 2018 – National Security Adviser Hermogenes C. Esperon Jr. met with Under-Secretary-General of United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Vladimir Voronkov, on the sidelines of the first High-level Conference of the Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States in New York on 28-29 June 2018.

Secretary Esperon and Under-Secretary-General Voronkov discussed Philippine-UN cooperation on counter-terrorism, particularly on capacity-building to address the threat of foreign terrorist fighters.

Secretary Esperon also briefed Under-Secretary-General Voronkov on the government’s continuing rehabilitation of Marawi City, highlighting that the government has allocated $1.5 billion for the city’s reconstruction efforts.

The Secretary also informed Under-Secretary-General Voronkov of government’s efforts to combat the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army, which the government has declared as a terrorist organization.

Under-Secretary-General Voronkov expressed his support for the Philippines, and noted the active participation of the Philippines in UNOCT’s counter-terrorism programs. END
