Dubbed as the largest technology conference in Asia, RISE 2018 was organized by the team behind Web Summit, Europe’s largest technology conference that has been held in Lisbon since 2016 after being hosted in Dublin since its inception in 2009.

RISE 2018 featured 18,000 participants from more than 100 countries, including big-name companies like IBM, Google, Booking.com, HSBC, Cathay Pacific and Cisco.

Speakers included Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Microsoft President Brad Smith, Grab Co-Founder Tan Hooi Ling, and Amazon Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels.

Philippine start-ups included e-payment app SiargaoPay, online grocery delivery site Pushkart.ph, electricity bidding platform Exora, online shopping mall SuccessMall, celebration app Searchfinn, and b2b marketplace matching site Burket.

Exora and Pushkart.ph were also shortlisted to pitch their companies to potential investors during the conference.

On 11 July, Emmy Lou V. Delfin and Juvy Manlapaz of DICT, Tenten Life CEO Michelle Leong, and Joanne Phillips of the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines called on Consul General Antonio A. Morales.

DICT officials noted that one of its objectives is to consolidate around 400 start-ups in the Philippines into one single organization, to streamline coordination and partnerships. They also presented the Philippines’ major initiatives designed to make ICT part of the country’s inclusive growth strategy: Tech4Ed and People Connect Free Wifi projects.

Consul General Morales also looked forward to the Philippines’ participation in next year’s RISE conference to promote the country’s start-ups and various ICT initiatives. END
