HONG KONG 23 July 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General played host to the first session of the “Sagip Kapwa, Press to Shock - Save a Life Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training,” in partnership with the Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) and the Domestic Workers Empowerment Project (DWEP).
During his welcome remarks, Consul General Antonio A. Morales reiterated that as carers and first responders in many households in Hong Kong, with the proper first aid training, each one of the 206,000 Filipino household service workers (HSWs) is a potential life saver.
The session consisted of a lecture by Mr. Roger Cheung, FSD Contract Ambulance Services Officer, and a hands-on module where FSD officers trained the participants on how to perform proper CPR, follow safety procedures, and use various AED devices available in Hong Kong.
According to Mr. Cheung, the third leading cause of death in Hong Kong is cardiac arrest. Without CPR or defibrillation, the survival rates drops by seven to ten percent per minute.
Fifty-five HSWs participated in the training session, and were given certificates by FSD. The next sessions will be conducted from August to December this year. Fire safety training will also be held starting 22 July.
The “Sagip Kapwa, Press to Shock – Save a Life and Fire Safety Ambassador Training Programme” was launched on 8 July 2018 at the Sheung Wan Fire Services Station, and is one of the Consulate’s projects under the auspices of its Gender and Development Program. END
