JAKARTA 24 July 2018 – Representatives of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, paid a courtesy call on Philippine Permanent Representative to the ASEAN Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, and discussed ways to broaden cooperation between ASEAN and MSF on humanitarian and global health issues.

MSF commended the Philippines for its commitment and leadership within ASEAN on global issues of mutual concern, particularly on disaster risk reduction, emergency response, and anti-microbial resistance.

Ambassador Buensuceso encouraged MSF to work with ASEAN member-states at a multilateral level, and to deepen its working relationship with the ASEAN Secretariat and the relevant ASEAN sectoral bodies.

The Ambassador further highlighted the importance of partnerships to implement concrete projects that realize the strong political will encapsulated in various high-level Declarations, such as the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR): Combatting AMR through One Health Approach, which was adopted during the 31st ASEAN Summit in November 2017 during the Philippines’ chairmanship of ASEAN.

MSF is an international and independent medical humanitarian organization that has a presence in over 70 countries, and provides medical humanitarian assistance to people in crisis situations. It was founded in 1971 in France. END
