BRUNEI 25 July 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, in collaboration with the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA)-Brunei Chapter, conducted its second health forum and screening activity at the Chancery on 22 July 2018.

The forum, a continuation of the Occupational Health Awareness Forum and Screening held last May, is entitled “Kaalaman sa Paunang Lunas, Karapatan at Tungkulin ng Bawat Mangagawang Filipino - An Occupational Health Related First Aid Seminar and Workshop”.

The event was attended by around 200 overseas Filipinos, who mostly female household service workers.

The speakers for the forum were three Filipino nurses working at the Rajah Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha hospital, who are experienced in first aid and emergency response.

Miko Angelo Mesiera discussed first aid for soft tissues and musculoskeletal injuries, and the basic techniques for splinting, bandaging and lifting patients. Ahmadfareez E. Monib spoke on first aid for altered level of consciousness, while Bon Eduard M. Paduata demonstrated basic life support procedures.

In his remarks, Chargé d’ Affaires Pete Raymond V. Delfin reiterated the importance of a healthy body and mind. He also emphasized that basic knowledge of first aid gained in the forum is an additional asset for those present, especially those working in hazardous environments.

After the forum, the participants broke into groups where around 50 volunteers from the PNA, conducted a workshop and simulation of Heimlich maneuver for choking and basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

A health screening of the participants followed the workshop, where the volunteer nurses checked the blood pressure, glucose levels and uric acid levels of the participants.  After the activities, the participants and the volunteer nurses were treated to a simple Filipino cuisine lunch.

The event forms part of the Embassy’s “preventive or proactive Assistance to Nationals,” which aims to provide the Filipino Community with the necessary knowledge on the basic procedures on how to administer first aid to their fellow workers at their workplace and to their family members at their homes. The health screening component of the session provides information and awareness on the status of their health.

This is the Embassy’s fourth Gender and Development (GAD) activity for the year. It regularly conducts GAD activities that promote gender and development issues for the benefit of Filipinos in Brunei, particularly for their empowerment and enhanced productivity. END
