BRASILIA 30 July 2018 – The Philippines assumed the Chairmanship of the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia (ACB) during its fourth meeting on 24 July 2018 held at the Philippine Embassy in Brasilia.
During the meeting, outgoing ACB chair Ambassador Do Ba Khoa of Vietnam formally handed over the chairmanship to Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Marichu B. Mauro.
In her remarks, Ambassador Mauro thanked the ACB for its confidence in choosing the Philippines to lead the group until the end of the year. She notes that the last time the Philippines held the ACB chairmanship was from July to December 2013, under then Ambassador Eva Betita.
Under the Philippine chairmanship, Ambassador Mauro promised to continue raising awareness of ASEAN in Brazil and to strengthen the host country’s engagement with ASEAN, both as a powerful regional economic bloc and bilaterally with each ASEAN member country.
The Ambassador emphasized that since Brazil will elect a new President in October this year, it is important for the ACB to ensure that the new political leadership continues to regard ASEAN as among Brazil’s key partners. END
