MOSCOW 30 July 2018 – Ricardo Alex Aimer T. Reyes, an 8-year-old third grade pupil from the St. Francis De Assisi Montessori School in Plaridel, Bulacan, placed third runner-up at the 2018 Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic (ALOHA) Mental Arithmetic International Competition held on 22 July 2018 at the World Trade Center in Moscow, Russia.

"In congratulating Ricardo Reyes for his achievement in this competition, I would also like to thank him and his family for showcasing our country and its youth," said Philippine Ambassador to Russia Carlos D. Sorreta.

Around 600 students from Bangladesh, China, Croatia, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Panama, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Uzbekistan, and the Philippines competed in this year’s tilt.  Participants were given 70 arithmetic items to solve in five minutes.

The event was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Science, and the Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturizm) of the Russian Federation.

ALOHA was founded by Loh Mun Sung in 1993 as an interactive brain development program that teaches mental calculation using only the abacus to children aged 5-13. Every year, ALOHA organizes an international competition to test the skills of its students from its 4,000 centers around the world.

Since its founding 25 years ago, ALOHA has already produced four million graduates from 39 countries. ALOHA Philippines was represented by its President and CEO Ivy Sato. END
