VANCOUVER 04 September 2018 – The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), represented by Executive Director Dennis J. I. Salvador, Development Manager Andi Baldonado and Research and Conservation Director Jayson C. Ibanez, paid a courtesy call at the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver on 21 August 2018.

They were in Vancouver for the 27th International Ornithological Congress held in Vancouver from 19 to 26 August 2018.

During their call, the PEF officials said that they joined the international congress to raise awareness on the conservation status of the Philippine eagle and save it from extinction.

According to the Foundation, there are only 400 pairs of monkey-eating eagles left in the Philippines, and their survival is endangered because of human slaying and loss of habitat due to deforestation.

The PEF particularly hopes to learn from Canada’s strong focus on First Nations and their heritage and culture, and to exchange experiences on how to strengthen engagement with the Philippines’ own Indigenous Peoples (IP) in the conservation of resources.

Reportedly 65 percent of the Philippines’ forest habitat is within the domain of the IPs, which is why these groups play a very central role in any effort to establish culture-based conservation as well as fight forest fires.

To support the PEF, the Consulate General hosted a reception in the evening featuring a mini-exhibit and a preview of the documentary film “Bird of Prey”, which will be shown at the Science World Museum. END
