SYDNEY 06 September 2018 – Newly-assigned Consul General in Sydney Maria Teresa L. Taguiang met with the mayors of Penrith, Campbelltown and Blacktown, three cities in New South Wales where big concentrations of Filipino-Australians reside.

On 01 August 2018, Consul General Taguiang thanked Penrith Mayor John Thain for supporting the projects and activities of the Filipino Community, specifically the holding of the Philippine flag-raising ceremony in Penrith, and for supporting the performance of the Loboc Children’s Choir last June.

Mayor Thain welcomed the Consul General to Penrith, and noted the important contributions of the Filipino Community in the multicultural diversity of the city.

The Consul General also paid a courtesy call on Mayor George Brticevic of Campbelltown, home to the biggest Rizal statue in Australia. It has around 6,000 Filipino-Australian residents.

Consul General Taguiang thanked the Mayor for his support for the Filipino Community, and for hosting the annual flag-raising event in the city in celebration of Philippine independence.

On 29 August 2018, the Consul General was welcomed by Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali with Filipino Councilor Carol Israel and some leaders of the Filipino Community actively working with Blacktown City Council.

Mayor Bali mentioned the vital role that the Filipino Community play in the city of Blacktown, which hosts around 30,000 of Filipino descent, which comprise almost 8.9 percent of the city’s population. The city has five city councilors of Filipino descent out of a 15-member council.

Blacktown has a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2010 with the League of Cities of the Philippines, currently chaired by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano. END
