PH Embassy in Phnom Penh Reaches Out to Filipinos in Southwest Cambodia

PHNOM PENH 07 September 2018 – A team from the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh traveled for more than five hours to undertake a consular outreach mission to Sihanoukville from 25 to 26 August 2018.

A coastal province 221 kilometers from the capital, Sihanoukville hosts about 300 Filipinos.

The Embassy team provided vital frontline passport services, Embassy registration, and notarial services and overseas voters’ registration to the Filipinos working and living in Sihanoukville.

The Filipino Community in Sihanoukville expressed appreciation for the Embassy's efforts to bring Philippine government services closer to where they are, as this minimized the need for them to be absent from work. For many of them, it was their first time to interface with the Embassy.

“Hindi madaling makapag-apply ng leave sa trabaho, lalo na at bago pa lang kami dito. Kaya, malaking tulong talaga na pinuntahan kaming mga tiga-Sihanoukville ng Embahada (It’s not easy to apply for work leave, especially since we’re new here. The Embassy’s visit is a big help for us here in Sihanoukville),” a Filipino served during the consular mission said.

Another Filipino was happy to be able to register as an overseas voter “Importante para sa akin ang maka-boto kahit nasa ibang bansa na ako. (It’s important for me to exercise my right to vote even if I’m off abroad). As a citizen, I want my voice to be counted.”

With the rapid economic development in the area, there has been an increasing number of overseas Filipinos in Sihanoukville, most of whom work in the construction and tourism industries. END
