SAN FRANCISCO 11 September 2018 — Guests and tenants of the Philippine Center Building where the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco is housed, were serenaded by the internationally-awarded Philippine dance and song troupe, the Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company.

Led by Ms. Melissa Amonilla, the group, composed of high school students from different high schools in Leyte, positioned themselves on the renovated staircase connecting the lobby of the Philippine Center to the second floor consular processing section. The students were accompanied by some of their teachers.

Singing the Filipino folk song “Alindahao” and popular songs, “People” and “I Could Have Dance All Night,” the Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company enthralled both tenants and guests of the Center and the Consulate General. The group also serenaded clients who were waiting for the processing of their consular documents at sixth floor consular section.

The group also, founded in 1961 by Ms. Teresita Veloso Pil at the Holy Infant College in Tacloban City, performed at the Open House of the San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center on 20 August 2018 and at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture on 25 August 2018.

After their performance, the group paid a courtesy call on Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr and other officers and staff of the Consulate General.

Consul General Bensurto hosted a simple merienda for the group and encouraged them to become part of the Spark*Connect*Empower movement which seeks to unite Filipinos all over the world and enjoins all of them to promote nation-building through various programs and activities that inspire love of country and heritage.

The Consul General reminded the students that through their performance, the students have become ambassadors of Philippine heritage and culture. He encouraged all of them to continue instilling pride in the Philippines through their artistic performances.
