MANAMA 24 September 2018 – Philippine Ambassador to Bahrain Alfonso A. Ver participated in a roundtable discussion on various International Labor Organization’s (ILO) conventions on foreign workers with the ILO Direct Contact Mission to Bahrain on 18 September 2018.
In his interventions, Ambassador Ver highlighted the reforms undertaken by Bahrain in compliance with labor standards for expatriate workers, particularly the initiatives of the Philippines in partnering with Bahrain in the implementation of a new measures that will address the issues facing Filipino household service workers.
These initiatives include the unified household service worker contract, lowering the cost of deployment, referral of Filipino wards to the Bahrain shelter and ways towards the regularization of undocumented workers.
The conventions discussed included the implementation of the Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention, 1058 (No. 111) reiterated at the Commission on the Application of Standards in ILO’s June 2017 and June 2018 sessions held at the United Nations Office under the auspices of UN Resident Coordinator Amin El Sharkawi and Kingdom of Bahrain on 18 September 2018.
The discussion was led by Karen Monaghan, Expert, ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations together with the top diplomats of labor-sending countries to Bahrain. END
