PH Embassy’s Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Attends Military Exercise in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 24 September 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam’s Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Colonel Jose Ricky A. Laniog attended the Exercise Setia Kawan (Loyal Friend) III 2018 or the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) – British Armed Forces (BAF) Combined Amphibious Capability Demonstration held at the Penanjong Garrison in Tutong, Brunei on 10 September 2018.

During the event, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and RBAF Supreme Commander, witnessed the combined amphibious demonstration and static exhibition conducted by RBAF and BAF personnel.

The Sultan also attended a luncheon hosted by RBAF Commander Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud following the military drill.

Prior to his departure, The Sultan signed a commemorative parchment and joined the group photo session and meet-and-greet with the participants.

Colonel Laniog had the opportunity to greet the Sultan during the Setia Kawan III Exercise. He was also able to meet Second Minister of Defence Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, RBAF Commander Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan and fellow Defense Attachés from other Diplomatic Missions during the event. 

Colonel Laniog likewise attended the Reception on-board United Kingdom’s Royal Navy Flagship HMS ALBION, a Landing Platform Dock ship, on 08 September 2018 where he met UK Royal Navy Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Ben Key CBE. 

The Exercise Setia Kawan III is a joint military exercise between Brunei and UK aimed at promoting defense diplomacy and enhancing bilateral relations. Said military exercise intends to enhance the interoperability and demonstrate the amphibious capabilities between the two countries’ armed forces while adapting to random waterfront threats. The Setia Kawan Exercise is one of the series of exercises between RBAF and BAF, where it was first conducted in 1988 and subsequently in 1997. END
