BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 25 September 2018 — The Chancery of the Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam was bustling with energy and activity when Filipino children aged five to 17 years old gathered to start the 2018 Filipino Language and Cultural Enrichment Program (FLCEP) on 10 September 2018.
Around 80 Filipino children and 25 volunteer teachers registered for this year’s FLCEP, which was held from 08 to 15 September 2018.
This year’s FLCEP commenced with a seminar workshop on Philippine indigenous culture held on 08 September 2018, in collaboration with Katutubo Exchange Philippines (KXPH), a volunteer organization comprising volunteer youths and cultural workers, that aims to promote indigenous culture and traditional arts.
Filipino children, as well as their parents and the volunteer teachers, participated in the seminar workshop, where KXPH taught them indigenous games, dances, clothing, and the traditional Filipino script “baybayin.” The students actively participated in the activities during the workshop.
On 10 September 2018, a flag-raising ceremony participated by all the children and volunteer teachers, together with Embassy officers and staff, was held before formal classes began for the children.
In his welcome remarks, Chargé d’ Affaires Pete Raymond V. Delfin emphasized the importance of the program in enabling the children to identify and be proud of their Filipino heritage.
The FLCEP is designed to provide young Filipino children, five to 17 years old, with the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge of Filipino culture and language, and boost their sense of nationalism.
During the six-day program, the children are expected to participate actively in their Filipino history and language lessons, and in cultural enrichment activities such as Filipino traditional games and performances.
A graduation ceremony was held for the students who were able to complete the whole program on Saturday, 15 September 2018.
Prior to the start of the 2018 FLCEP classes, the volunteer teachers attended a seminar and workshop on the Filipino language conducted by Professor Frieda Marie Bonus-Adeva at the Embassy.
The FLCEP module uses instruction lessons and methods consistent with the Philippines’ K-12 basic education curriculum.
This year marks the 11th year of the FLCEP, which was introduced in 2008. Since then, parents have been looking forward to the conduct of the program as it has significantly benefited many Filipino children in Brunei, particularly in their reintegration into the Philippines. END
