YEREVAN 01 October 2018 – The Filipino Community in Armenia warmly welcomed a four-person team from the Philippine Embassy in Moscow who conducted the first-ever consular outreach and assistance-to-nationals mission to the Western Asian country.

More than 60 Filipinos were able to renew their passports, register for the upcoming national elections and avail of notarial and civil registry services. Some also took the opportunity to seek consular advice regarding their stay in Armenia and obtain urgent consular assistance.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to provide much-needed service to our kababayans in Armenia who have been growing in number in recent years,” said Philippine Ambassador to Russia Carlos D. Sorreta.

“We are grateful to the Department of Foreign Affairs, especially the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, for providing the funding for this activity,” he added.

According to reports from Philippine Honorary Consul General in Yerevan Albert Taroyan, many of the Filipinos in Armenia are transplants from Gulf states who found new opportunities in the country and elected to stay.

Some have even started legitimate businesses such as restaurants, hostels and tourism agencies that cater to fellow Filipinos and other nationalities.

Natutuwa po kami na nakadalaw po ang Embassy dito sa Armenia. Malaking bagay po sa amin na mayroon pong malalapitan kung kinakailangan ng tulong. (We are happy for the Embassy’s effort to visit us here in Armenia. It’s a big help for us to know where to ask for help),” said Gilbert Aguila, a Filipino business-owner in Yerevan.

Armenia is a landlocked country in the Caucasus Region bordering Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia. It has a population of about three million and is considered one of the oldest Christian nations in the world. END
