BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 12 October 2018 — Philippine Normal University (PNU) Officer-In-Charge Dr. Maria Antoinette C. Montealegre emphasizes the premium that Philippines puts on quality teacher education and the importance of strengthening the program of relevant ASEAN institutions during the 8th Meeting of Presidents of Association of Southeast Asian Teacher Education Network (AsTEN) in Brunei on 03 October 2018.
Discussed during the 8th AsTEN Presidents Meeting were quality assurance of teacher education institutions (TEIs) in ASEAN, student teacher exchange programs, and planned initiatives for 2019-2020.
The AsTEN is a network of premier teacher education institutions in the ASEAN region where members work together to address issues, challenges and concerns relevant to teacher education programs, practices and policies. The network also serves as a vehicle for collaboration in both academic and research endeavors within and across member-institutions in the ASEAN region.
In an earlier meeting, Philippine Embassy Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Pete Raymond V. Delfin discussed with Dr. Montealegre the Filipino Language and Cultural Enrichment Program (FLCEP) being conducted for Filipino students in Brunei.
“The FLCEP prepares the students for college in the Philippines and helps ensure that they won’t be required to take remedial classes in Filipino,” CDA Delfin said.
On the other hand, Dr. Montealegre conveyed that PNU is one of the Partner Agencies of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the implementation of the “Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am at Sir” (SPIMS) program, which prepares migrant workers who are planning to enter the teaching profession in the Philippines.
She added that PNU is ready to partner with the Embassy in the conduct of professional licensure examinations for overseas Filipinos in Brunei.
Dr. Montealegre was accompanied by Research Center for Teacher Quality Director Dr. Gina O. Gonong, AsTEN Executive Director Dr. Maria Elvira A. Asuan, and AsTEN Technical Assistant John Carlo M. Ramos.
Aside from PNU, other ASEAN Universities which attended the 8th AsTEN Presidents Meeting included Singapore’s National Institute of Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, National University of Laos, Malaysia’s Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris, Yangon University of Education, Thailand’s Kasetsart University, and Vietnam’s University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
