Tanghalang Pilipino Stands Out at Moscow’s 2018 World Theatre Congress

Tanghalang Pilipino performs “Nang Dalawin ng Pag-ibig si Juan Tamad” at the 12th World Theatre Congress at the Theatre Center “The Cherry Orchard” in Moscow on 23 August 2018.

MOSCOW 18 October 2018 — The Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theatre company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), took the spotlight at the XII World Theatre Congress, in Moscow on 20-24 August 2018.

The group’s performed its much-admired “Nang Dalawin ng Pag-ibig si Juan Tamad,” at the Theatre Center “The Cherry Orchard” on 23 August 2018. The play, under the direction of Mr. Jonathan Tadioan, is a stage adaptation by Mr. Rody Vera of National Artist Nick Joaquin’s children story “How Love Came to Juan Tamad.” 

The Tanghalang Pilipino’s performance was well-received. It was attended by Russian students, professors, co-Congress participants, theatre enthusiasts, media and the Filipino Community in Moscow. Undersigned and other Embassy personnel also watched the show.

“Philippine Theater seldom makes an appearance on the Moscow stage, but when it does, it leaves an indelible mark. The Tanghalang Pilipino gave an outstanding performance, full of energy and creativity. The writing and music were superb as was overall production. It was a proud moment for the Philippine Embassy and all Filipinos in Russia”, said Philippine Ambassador to Moscow Carlos D. Sorreta.

He added that “cultural exchanges play an important part in building understanding between the peoples of different countries.  We are very grateful to our artists, and the CCP and Tanghalang Pilipino officials for bringing to Moscow this exceptional talent and artistry of Filipino theatre actors.”

The 19-member Philippine delegation was led by CCP President Arsenio J. Lizaso and Tanghalang Pilipino Foundation, Inc.Company Manager Maria Carmela Manuel.

The XII World Theatre Congress “Theatre and University in the XXI Century” was organized by the Moscow Open Student Theatre (MOST), National University of Science and Technology MISIS, MGU Student Development Foundation and International University Theatre Association (IUTA).

Around 30 countries sent a delegation to this year’s Congress, composed of theatre directors and actors, festival producers, students, and researchers.

The Congress aims provide a venue to discuss current issues on the development of university theatres and theatre curricula and pedagogy.  Its program included research paper presentations, demonstrations and workshops, poster presentation and theatre performances. END
