PH Embassy in Dili Holds Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar

DILI 12 October 2018 – In observance of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and to inform the Filipino Community in Timor-Leste about their rights as migrants, the Philippine Embassy in Dili conducted a seminar on human trafficking awareness to the members of the community at JL Villa Conference Room on 15 September 2018.

“We must act together as a community to combat human trafficking and ensure that Filipino labor migration to Timor-Leste follows the correct protocols, rules and procedures,” Ambassador Muin told the participants.

In his welcome remarks, Ambassador to Timor-Leste Abdulmaid K. Muin said that human trafficking victims are predominantly female and that the Filipino Community in Timor-Leste must be very vigilant of possible human trafficking cases.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM)-Timor-Leste Office jointly organized the seminar with the Embassy.

Acting as seminar facilitators and speakers were IOM-Timor-Leste’s Counter Trafficking Program Officer Pamela Clifford, and IOM-Timor-Leste’s Counter Trafficking Senior Assistant Jacinto Amaral.

Mr. Amaral and Ms. Clifford discussed the local laws and incidences of human trafficking in Timor-Leste. They also informed the participants on the process of filing complaints and securing assistance for human trafficking victims based on Timorese law.

The seminar was actively participated by 70 members of the Filipino Community in Timor-Leste, including religious people, entrepreneurs, and professionals. END
