PH Consulate General Supports Plaridel Awards

SAN FRANCISCO 29 October 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco continues to show support for various activities in celebration of Filipino-American History Month this October, including the sixth Plaridel Awards, which is spearheaded by the Philippine American Press Club (PAPC)-USA.
Consul General Henry S. Bensurto Jr. gave welcome remarks at the Plaridel Awards during the PAPC’s 30th anniversary held at San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center on 04 October 2018.
He emphasized the need to pass on to the younger generation knowledge and love of Philippine culture in the same manner that the first Filipino propagandists were able to spark love of country and work towards nation building.
The Consul General was an awardee himself of the Plaridel Awards’ Torchbearer Awards in 2016, which honors outstanding Filipinos who have displayed visionary leadership that serve to inspire their peers, the community and the country.
The awardees for this year’s Plaridel Awards include community leader and San Francisco State University History professor Dawn Bohulano Mabalon for a posthumous Torch Bearer award for Community Leadership, veteran journalist Bobby Caina Calvan for the Torch Bearer Award for Journalism, Merit awardees to Rodel Rodis and Lisa Suguitan-Melnick, TFC/Balitang America’s Henni Espinosa for Best Community Reporting in Television, Emil Guillermo for Best Commentary, and Positively Filipino’s Elizabeth Ann Quirino for Best Tourism Feature Story, among others.
