SINGAPORE 29 October 2018 – Art and science met at two of the exhibitions featured in Art Trek 12, an annual art exhibition by the Philippine Embassy in Singapore showcasing Filipino talent.
At Goshen Art Gallery’s “Jubilation: The Art of Jeff Dahilan”, which was opened on 27 September 2018, Jeff Dahilan’s impressive technique involved employing visual tricks in his abstract and figurative subjects using trigonometric designs.
According to Mr. Dahilan, his paintings “do not intend to grab one’s attention right away and the meaning is not obvious, but the paintings speak for themselves and make some noise”.
His artworks can be divided into two sets, the first one involved mosaic-like paintings that challenged people to look more closely to find the hidden figures within the artwork, while the other depicts tin foils of various colors that allow viewers to see a luminous effect when captured by a smartphone.
The other exhibit which opened on 28 September 2018 was a pop-up gallery organized by Momentous Arts entitled “Beauty and Youth” featured six contemporary Filipino artists namely, Pete Jimenenz, Jan Calleja, Beejay Esber, Gino Bueza, Stephen Taneo and Raul Jorolan. The masterpieces of these artists reflect their youthful spirit and individualism shaped by their own personal experiences.
According to the artists, they see beauty in personality and character presence, not in symmetry.
Aside from the youthful vibe of the featured artists’ works, the exhibition also featured “Castella” a new app that lets people see how a painting will transform space through the lens of augmented reality.
The Embassy, headed by Ambassador Joseph Del Mar Yap, graced the opening exhibit at Goshen Art Gallery, while Consul General Victorio Mario M. Dimagiba Jr. represented the Ambassador during the Momentous Art exhibit.
On its 12th year, Art Trek is organized by the Embassy in collaboration with various Singapore galleries to showcase and promote the works of Filipino artists. Through the years, it has become the centerpiece of the Embassy’s cultural diplomacy program.
Mr. Dahilan’s exhibition at the Goshen Art Gallery ran until 07 October 2018, while the “Beauty and Youth” exhibition at the Great World City ran until 09 October 2018. END
