PARIS 31 October 2018 – The Philippines highlighted the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) important role in maintaining peace and international solidarity during the Plenary Debate of the 205th Session of the UNESCO Executive Board on 08 October 2018.

“Our world today is characterized by paradoxes and challenges so complex that no country, no matter how powerful, can tackle them alone. By providing a forum for international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication and information, UNESCO can contribute to securing a more permanent and lasting peace,” Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro said as she delivered the Philippine statement during the debate.

Ambassador Lazaro also emphasized that peace depends on respect for diversity, recognition of human dignity, and reaffirmation of shared values. She stated that UNESCO should strive to stay closer to its original mandate and promote international cooperation and understanding among member states, instead of straying into politically divisive issues.

The Philippines was elected as member of the UNESCO Executive Board for the period of 2017 to 2021.

As member of the Board, the Philippines pledged to work on enhancing the capacity of Member States, particularly developing countries, in order to achieve sustainable development and lasting peace and security.  The Philippines also aims to work on improving the efficiency and governance procedure of the organization.
