PH Consulate General in San Francisco Commemorates 74th Anniv of Leyte Landing

SAN FRANSICO 08 November 2018 — To commemorate the 74th anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landing and in conjunction with Filipino-American History Month, the Alvarado Project held a benefit dinner on 20 October 2018 at the Patio Espanol Restaurant in San Francisco, California, USA.

Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo, San Mateo County District 5 Supervisor David Canepa, and Rebecca Delgado Rottman, Board Chair of the West Bay Pilipino Multi Service Center, attended the event and delivered remarks.

Deputy Consul General Raquel R. Solano, speaking on behalf of Consul General Henry S. Bensurto Jr., said that it is important for the Filipino American community to celebrate this historic moment as it provides a chance to honor our forebears, who experienced hardship and sacrifice for love of country.

It also allowed the community to remember the shared history of the Philippines and the United States, when General Douglas MacArthur landed in Palo, Leyte to recapture and liberate the Philippines from Japanese forces during World War II—74 years ago.

The Alvarado Project, led by Executive Director Janet Alvarado, is a community-based, non-profit, volunteer organization that seeks to foster multicultural understanding through cultural programs and collecting historically significant artifacts and materials about the Filipino American community.  The Alvarado Project spearheaded the filing of California Senate Concurrent Resolution 20, designating October 20 as Leyte Landing Commemoration Day.

As part of their activities in 2019, the Project is planning to organize a trip among Filipino Americans to Leyte as a “sentimental journey” to celebrate the milestone 75th anniversary of the Leyte Gulf Landing. END
