Wreath-Laying Ceremony Kicks-Off Fil-Am History Month in Carson City

LOS ANGELES 12 October 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles participated in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Monument in Carson City’s International Sculpture Garden to officially kick-off the month-long celebrations of Filipino-American History Month on 06 October 2018. 

After the ceremony, a cultural program followed at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald (CJMM) Community Center.

In his remarks, Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz highlighted the significance of Filipino-American History Month which goes beyond merely taking pride in the large presence of Filipinos in the United States.

He added that for many Fil-Ams, especially the younger generation, October has come to symbolize the Filipinos’ continuing struggle for greater recognition in the United States which has spanned centuries.

Carson City Mayor Albert Robles, for his part, acknowledged the contributions of the Filipino-American Community particularly Council member Santarina’s peace and order efforts which led to about 30 percent decrease of the crime rate in the city.

During the program, awards for leadership, youth achievement, and heroism were also presented to outstanding members of the community.

Cultural performances featured song numbers and select dances from different regions of the Philippines which were well received and appreciated by the audience.

The celebrations are organized annually by Carson City to showcase the contributions of Filipino-Americans throughout the years. END
