HANOI 23 November 2018 — In his message at the 45th anniversary celebration of the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies in Hanoi on 14 November 2018, Ambassador to Vietnam Noel Servigon proposed that there should be more efforts to harmonize the legal systems of the Southeast Asian countries in order to ensure more efficient economic interaction in the region
Ambassador Servigon proposed that there should be more efforts to harmonize the legal systems of the Southeast Asian countries in order to ensure more efficient economic interaction in the region. He also noted that the lack of a common language still continues to be a barrier in achieving this objective.
Basing on his diplomatic experiences in Vietnam and in Indonesia, Ambassador Servigon also pointed out that due to the rapid increase of economic activities in the region, there is a need to promote better understanding of the judicial procedures that affect Southeast Asian migrant workers, including professionals and technical experts. He cited the case of Vietnam where the socialist legal system is substantially different from Western-based legal systems.
He expressed the hope that the Institute will conduct researches on this subject of regional legal harmonization and that the results will be shared with other countries in the region for the benefit of migrant workers who move within Southeast Asia. END
