HONG KONG SAR 09 November 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong donated a score of books on Philippine cuisine to the Hong Kong Central Library on 30 October 2018.
The books were turned over by Deputy Consul General Roderico C. Atienza to Hong Kong Central Library Chief Librarian Mary Cheng in a simple ceremony at the library in Causeway Bay.
Books in the collection include Kulinarya by Margarita Fores et al, Country Cooking by Michaela Fenix, and some cookbooks from Mama Sita.
Deputy Consul General Atienza expressed appreciation to the Hong Kong Central Library for accommodating and arranging the turnover ceremony on short notice, noting that cuisine has become an important object of Philippine cultural diplomacy and promotion with the hope that it would become part of the culinary mainstream of Hong Kong.
“By making these available to the public, we are hopeful that Hong Kong locals and expatriates alike will have a better appreciation of Philippine culture and cuisine and common threads among us in ‘gastronomic’ terms will be highlighted,” he said.
The Consulate General also donated a frame of commemorative stamps of Filipino food icon Teresita “Mama Sita” R. Reyes.
Officials from both the Consulate General and the Central Library expressed hopes for further collaboration in the future.
As part of its programs and advocacies to promote Philippine culture in Hong Kong, the Consulate General engages various partners and periodically donates books and other media to make Philippine content available to the Hong Kong academe and reading public. END
