HONG KONG 09 November 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong held a five-day exhibit entitled “Silid Sining: Unlocking Pinay Creativity,” showcasing the artworks of 20 women household service workers (HSWs) in Hong Kong on 28 October 2018.
The participating HSWs were part of the free art workshops also hosted by the Consulate General over a five-month period at its gallery.
The workshop, conducted by Pitter Painter art studio founder and director Grace Camacho over the course of five sessions from 06 May 2018 to 14 October 2018, featured fundamentals in acrylic painting, watercolor, and oil pastel drawing providing opportunities for the participants to learn different art mediums and techniques.
The workshop and exhibit are part of the Consulate General’s programs and advocacies to provide alternative avenues of development for household service workers in Hong Kong not only for their artistic expression but also to unlock their potential and broaden their knowledge and skills.
The workshop participants’ final artworks featured their individual interpretations of what constitutes a Filipino woman hero. Most of the participants depicted their mothers and women migrant workers, such as themselves, as examples of women heroes.
The exhibit ran until 01 November 2018.
The project, overseen by the Consulate General’s Cultural Section, was held under the auspices of the Consulate’s Gender and Development Program to implement the Magna Carta for Women, especially in difficult circumstances and to provide women Filipino Community members with capacity-building initiatives to hone their artistic skills while working in Hong Kong.
