PH Participates in Ibero-American Summit in Guatemala

MEXICO 20 November 2018 – In its capacity as Associate Observer, the Philippines participated in the 26th Ibero-American Summit in Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala with the theme “A Prosperous, Inclusive and Sustainable Ibero-America” on 15-16 November 2018.

Ambassador to Mexico Demetrio R. Tuason, accompanied by Third Secretary and Vice-Consul Faith Valerie P. Tan and Honorary Consul Silvana Ayuso, headed the Philippine delegation.

During the working breakfast for Associate Observers, hosted by Guatemala’s Foreign Affairs Vice Minister and National Coordinator Manuel Estuardo Roldan Barillas and Ibero-American Summit Director General Rebecca Grynspan, Ambassador Tuason conveyed the greetings of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., and expressed the Philippines’ desire to continue cooperating with countries of the Ibero-America region in the core areas of knowledge, culture and social cohesion.

The Summit was attended by all 22 countries in Ibero-America. The King of Spain, 14 Presidents, and two Vice Presidents headed their respective country’s delegations, signifying the importance of the Summit as a mechanism for regional cooperation and global impact.

The Heads of State and Government unanimously approved the Declaration of Guatemala, committing Ibero-American countries to sustainable development and adherence to the United Nations Agenda 2030 and the Antigua Plan of Action for Ibero-American Cooperation.

The Summit also approved 20 special communiques on various topics covering people with disabilities, addressing climate change, promoting south-south cooperation, and supporting a sustainable coffee trade, among others.  END
