HONG KONG 05 October 2018 – For the first time, a Hong Kong-based Filipino gallery joined the most popular and longest-running hotel art fair in Asia, featuring artworks by 10 Filipino artists in its initial offering.
Kambal Gallery, founded by twins Irene Bernarte Haagen and Anna Bernarte Pendry, joined the 13th edition of the biannual Asian Contemporary Art Show at the Conrad Hong Kong which ran for four days starting on 28 September 2018.
The gallery featured the work of Filipino artists, Salvador J. Ching, Buds Convocar, Demet dela Cruz, Ysa Gernale Santos, Ram Mallari Jr., Sam Penaso, Rovi Jesher Salegumba, Emman Sia, Rishab Tibon, and Juan Elani Tulas.
“It’s really a nice feeling when you see people appreciate the arts and when they ask questions about the artworks and how they’re made,” said Ms. Pendry. “We want the public to appreciate how much hard work the artists put into each piece no matter what the material—oil, watercolor, acrylic, or mixed media—in order to deliver their message.”
Representing the Philippine Consulate General at a pre-opening private view, Deputy Consul General Roderico C. Atienza and Consul Paulo V. Saret complimented the Bernarte sisters for their efforts to bring Filipino artists to the attention of international art collectors in Asia, especially Manila-based artists who may not enjoy the same kind of exposure back home.
Over 250 artists from 20 countries, from some of the world's most interesting and promising talents as well as those who have already achieved recognition in private and public collections and at auctions, were part of the exhibit. More than 2,500 unique works of art that were spread out across 85 art living spaces in Conrad Hotel’s four floors.
Apart from the 10 Filipino artists, the Kambal Gallery also featured the works of Thomas Carrigan and Kate Sparrow, two Hong Kong-based British artists at the fair.
The show coincided with the fall auction season featuring not only original paintings, but also sculpture and photography from some of the world's emerging and mid-career artists from countries including Myanmar, Lebanon, South Korea, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Peru, and China, among others.
