CHICAGO 12 November 2018 – During the James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs on 22 October 2018, Consul General Gina Jamoralin of the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago shared the Philippines’ experience with international refugees and its policy in protecting Filipino migrant workers with the students from the University of Nebraska–Kearney (UNK).

With the conference theme, “The World in Crisis: A Call to Activism,” Consul General Jamoralin delivered her lecture on “Philippine Refugee Policy and Migration Initiatives” under the session “Migration and ASEAN: Movement, Prosperity and Welfare in Southeast Asia.”

In her lecture, Consul General Jamoralin gave a narrative of the Philippines’ hundred-year-experience in welcoming foreign refugees that opened the Philippine Refugee Processing Center in Morong, Bataan.

The Philippine presentation also touched on the country’s role in the United Nations in negotiating with other UN members the final text of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), which will be formally adopted in Morocco in December 2018.

The UNK James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs, held every two years, is an avenue for dialogue between the diplomatic community in the US Midwest and UNK students and the academe. The Philippine presentation comes at a time when migration remains a global phenomenon and attendant economic, social, and political aspects.   The next UNK James Smith Conference will be in 2020.
