RIYADH 10 December 2018 — The ASEAN Women Circle (AWC) of Riyadh conducted its first ASEAN Education program on 4 November 2018 at the Palm Crest International School (PCIS), a Philippine school in Saudi Arabia’s capital.
The program promoted awareness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its member states to female Filipino students from Grades 7 through 10.
Madam Luluk Maftuh of Indonesia, Madam Maureen Anderson of Singapore, Madam Woranuch Khuprasert of Thailand, Mrs. Noor Rahman of Malaysia, and Mrs. Bernadette Aro of the Philippines led the AWC members, who attended the event wearing their national costumes.
The school warmly greeted their guests, with the preschoolers coming in ASEAN costumes and several students from mixed grade levels, showcasing their talents through performances.
In her welcome remarks, PCIS Principal Ivy Manuel thanked the AWC for their initiative in educating the students about ASEAN and emphasized that experiencing things first hand is the best teacher for them.
Mrs. Aro presented an overview of ASEAN, its Member States, and how the future of these young Filipinas may be affected by the ASEAN Community. Ms. Safa Rinissae of Thailand shared facts and the local customs of Thailand, as well as the sights to see in Bangkok, while Mrs. Farah Chian of Singapore shared her country’s demographics, main industries, and water technology.
The program culminated with the handing over of ASEAN booklets from the Philippine’s Department of Foreign Affairs for the school’s library, namely “The Philippines in ASEAN,” and the “ASEAN Charter” translated into Filipino, Cebuano and Ilokano. The students were also able to receive ASEAN handouts as well as brochures from Singapore and Thailand.
