LISBON 10 December 2018 – The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA) on academic exchanges at the ADMU in Quezon City on 07 November 2018.

“The partnership between ADMU and NOVA, with the signing of the MOU, is a manifestation of the cultural and historic bonds between the two countries so it is only fitting that we solidify the partnership with this event. Filipino and Portuguese students and academicians alike, through this educational alliance, will have opportunities to pursue new academic perspectives in their fields of study as well as have a rich cultural experience in an overseas environment,” said Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Celia Anna M. Feria at the MOU signing.

Ambassador Feria further added that “The formalization of the MOU is a revival of the universities’ partnership through the Embassy’s Cultural Diplomacy Legacy Project which aims to not only strengthen educational collaboration and cooperation but further enhance academic excellence between the two educational institutions.   The partnership will draw on the strength of experiences, exchanges of knowledge, ideas, network, and resources between ADMU and NOVA.”

During the MOU signing, the two universities were represented by Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ, President of ADMU, and Dr. Pedro Cardim, Associate Professor of NOVA. Officials from ADMU were also present to witness the event.

After the signing, a ceremonial turnover of 50 academic journals on history published by the Centro Humanidades (CHAM), an inter-university academic research unit affiliated with NOVA and the University of Azores, were presented to ADMU.

This symbolic handover is part of CHAM’s commitment and support in providing academic resources to those interested in the field of historiography.

The MOU signing between ADMU and NOVA is also part of the Embassy’s thrust to build people-to-people contacts by promoting academic exchanges between Philippine and Portuguese Universities.

The Embassy has already organized lectures through its Magellan Lecture Series in part of its cultural diplomacy legacy project where Philippine historians and professors were invited to give the historiography on the shared heritage between the two countries.   END
