PH Consulate General Hosts Information Session with Toronto Police

The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto held an information session with the Toronto Police Service (TPS) at the Consulate premises on 27 November 2018.

In her welcome remarks, Deputy Consul General Bernadette Therese Fernandez stated that the Filipino Community in Toronto needs to cooperate with the Toronto police to lower crime incidence, lessen settlement difficulties, and promote and protect the interests of Filipinos living in the city. She also thanked the officers of TPS for engaging the Filipino Community and providing vital and helpful information, especially for newcomers in the city.

Constable Don Louie Laurel of the 32 Division of the Toronto Police Service (TPS) discussed issues regarding domestic violence and related offences, and how the police service handles such cases. He also provided contact information of the services that residents can access when they encounter or hear about these concerns. (Toronto PCG photo)

Constable Matt Romeral explains safety and security issues for residents in Toronto, especially newcomers and online resources that provide updates on new city rules and regulations. Matt Romeral talked about important issues on personal safety, home and residence safety, and vehicle safety that residents would find valuable. Consul Edna May Grecia-Lazaro also gave a talk on matters related to the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW), including the existence of laws as well as services made available by the government and non-governmental organizations to assist survivors of VAW, and the need for more concerted efforts to uphold women’s rights and push for a VAW-free community.
