IOM-Egypt Briefs PH Embassy in Cairo on Human Trafficking

CAIRO 07 December 2018 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Egypt conducted a briefing on trafficking in persons (TIP) for the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Cairo on 01 December 2018.
Project Officer Kristiina Wells and National Programme Officer Salma Elmasry from IOM Egypt’s Migrant Protection and Assistance Unit conducted the briefing at the Sentro Rizal in the Embassy.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador to Egypt Sulpicio M. Confiado lauded the strong partnership between IOM and the Philippine missions abroad, citing several examples of cooperation with IOM in assisting migrant Filipinos.
Ms. Wells provided an overview of the Palermo Convention and its Protocols, the definition and identification of human trafficking, and the legislative framework in the approach to counter-trafficking.
Ms. Elmasry explained the difference between human trafficking and human smuggling. She also discussed the forms of assistance provided by IOM to victims of trafficking.
The TIP briefing is one of the activities currently being organized by the Embassy and IOM Egypt to raise awareness on trafficking and support counter-trafficking in Egypt and in the countries of its jurisdiction. END
